I have it installed but haven't had a chance to play yet. I now that they had big problems with the North American servers on release day. I'm goingto try here in a couple minutes.

Do any of you have any recommendations for photo editing software that is easy to use. This would be for my father who is relatively computer savvy but wants something in his words "simple but efficient".
You can change your avatar in your profile. There is an Account Settings option in the drop down menu by your name in the upper righthand corner. On that page there is a place to upload your own avatar.
If you are a WoW player you can use your character's avatar. To do that go to your profile (click on your name in the upper right corner (or anywhere else you see a link to your name). How do I get the cool avatar?
You can change your avatar in your profile. Click on the little icon next to your name in the upper right hand corner. If you mouse over the current avatar it'll give you a link to "Change Picture". If you want to use your WoW toon for your avatar, add your character in the characters tab on your profile screen.
